Product Overview

A 5-hp engine that starts only with priming, dies when the choke opens, hunts at a steady speed, floods the crankcase, or leaks around the bowl may have a restricted or damaged carburetor. This replacement provides a complete fuel-metering assembly for compatible older Briggs & Stratton engines when cleaning or rebuilding the original is not the preferred repair.

The same horsepower rating was used across many engine families. Confirm the stamped engine model/type/code, fuel-tank relationship, mounting pattern, choke, linkage, and reference number rather than relying on the 5-hp label alone.

Key Features & Performance

  • Replacement carburetor for compatible classic Briggs 5-hp engines
  • Addresses varnished passages, damaged castings, worn inlet components, or persistent leaks

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can a carburetor cause gasoline to enter the engine oil? A: Yes. A stuck float or contaminated needle and seat can allow fuel leakage. Correct the cause and replace contaminated oil before operating the engine.

Q: Will this fit any 5-hp Briggs engine? A: No. Use the stamped model/type/code and physical carburetor design to confirm compatibility.

Q: Why should the tank be cleaned too? A: Rust, water, and old fuel left in the tank can immediately contaminate a replacement carburetor.

It was a direct fit on the 5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine.I did have issues with one threaded home, a little modification had to be done.Otherwise, this was a good carburetor.

I purchased this 498298 carburetor kit for my Briggs & Stratton engine on a wood splitter, and it worked out perfectly. The carburetor was an exact fit, which made installation straightforward with no modifications needed. What really made this a great purchase is that it came as a complete kit. The included air filter, spark plug, and gaskets meant I had everything needed to finish the job in one go, which saved time and extra trips for parts. After installation, the engine runs smoothly again and starts up without issue. Overall, this was a very convenient and cost-effective repair solution. I’d definitely recommend it for similar small engine repairs.

My fiancé installed this Carburetor built by Briggs & Stratton and didn’t have any significant issues during installation with the parts. Our weed eater is up and running.

I bought this for my 35 year old roto tiller that gets used twice a year. The old carb and fuel tank were all full of nasty old gas and corrosion from years of ethanol rich pump gas. The new carb installed with out too much trouble, unlike others have stated all the screw holes were the right size and the gaskets were correct.I'm glad I took pictures of the linkages before disassembly.that hepled me on reassembly otherwise some of it was a mystery. Started right up and ran well.Didnt need much choke either.I should have done this years ago.

Great price for a replacement carburetor. Easy to install and worked perfectly on the first startup. Absolutely no adjustment needed. You will need to borrow a few parts off of your original carburetor but it’s not a problem. My old 1982 pressure washer purrs like a kitten.
