When a small engine only runs with the choke engaged, the engine is usually receiving too little fuel or too much air. The choke restricts airflow and creates a richer mixture, temporarily allowing the engine to continue running.
This symptom is common on lawn mowers, generators, pressure washers, garden tractors, snow blowers, and other carbureted equipment.
Why the Choke Keeps the Engine Running
A properly operating engine should continue running after the choke is gradually opened. If opening the choke causes the engine to stall, the normal fuel circuit is not supplying the correct mixture.
The choke is compensating for a lean condition rather than repairing the underlying problem.
Clogged Main Jet
The main jet meters fuel during normal engine operation. Varnish, dirt, corrosion, or stale fuel deposits can partially or completely block the opening.
A partially clogged jet may allow the engine to start but not supply enough fuel once the choke is opened or the engine is placed under load.
Restricted Idle Circuit
Small passages inside the carburetor control fuel at idle and low throttle. These openings are easy to restrict because they are very small.
A restricted idle circuit may cause:
- Stalling at idle
- Surging
- Hard starting
- Hesitation when accelerating
- Operation only with partial choke
Stale or Contaminated Fuel
Old gasoline can leave deposits inside the carburetor and may absorb moisture during storage. Drain questionable fuel and inspect the tank for water, rust, dirt, or degraded fuel.
Fresh fuel will not automatically dissolve hardened deposits already inside the carburetor.
Restricted Fuel Filter or Fuel Line
A partially blocked filter, pinched hose, deteriorated fuel line, or restricted shutoff valve can reduce fuel flow. The engine may receive enough fuel to start but not enough to run normally.
Blocked Fuel-Tank Vent
The tank must allow air to enter as fuel leaves. A blocked cap vent can create a vacuum that slows or stops fuel flow.
An engine with a blocked vent may run normally for several minutes and then begin surging or stalling.
Intake Gasket or Manifold Leak
A damaged intake gasket, loose carburetor mounting bolt, cracked insulator, or manifold leak can allow unmetered air into the engine.
This extra air creates a lean mixture that may improve temporarily when the choke is applied.
Governor and Linkage Problems
A bent linkage, weak governor spring, or incorrectly installed control rod can cause unstable engine speed. Inspect the linkage before replacing the carburetor.
Should You Clean or Replace the Carburetor?
Cleaning may correct the problem when the carburetor is structurally sound and the restriction can be removed safely.
Replacement may be the better option when:
- The body is corroded
- The throttle shaft is loose
- The float is damaged
- The inlet needle leaks
- The passages remain restricted after cleaning
- The mounting surface is damaged
Confirm Fitment Before Ordering
Match the replacement carburetor to the engine model, type or specification number, original part number, mounting pattern, choke arrangement, linkage, and fuel inlet.
