Many small engine carburetors use an electric fuel shutoff solenoid at the bottom of the float bowl. When the ignition key is turned on, the solenoid retracts a plunger and opens a fuel passage. When the key is turned off, the plunger closes the passage.
A failed solenoid, damaged wire, corroded connector, or blocked fuel passage can prevent the engine from starting or running properly.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Carburetor Solenoid
- The engine cranks but does not start
- The engine starts and immediately stalls
- No click is heard when the key is turned on
- The engine operates intermittently
- The engine backfires after shutdown
- The solenoid becomes unusually hot
- Fuel flow remains blocked even when power is present
Listen for the Solenoid Click
Many fuel shutoff solenoids make a noticeable click when the key is switched between off and run. The click indicates that the plunger is moving, but it does not confirm that the plunger moves fully or that the fuel passage is clear.
Inspect the Electrical Connector
Check for:
- Corrosion
- Loose terminals
- Broken wires
- Damaged insulation
- Melted connector plastic
- Poor engine or frame ground
A wiring fault can create the same symptoms as a failed solenoid.
Check for Voltage and Ground
Use the correct wiring diagram and test equipment to verify that the solenoid receives the proper voltage when the key is in the run position.
If voltage or ground is missing, inspect the ignition switch, fuse, wiring, safety circuit, and connectors before replacing the solenoid.
Inspect the Plunger
Remove the solenoid only after the engine is cool and the fuel supply is controlled. Inspect the plunger for varnish, corrosion, bending, or sticking.
A damaged or swollen plunger may not retract fully.
Check the Fuel Passage
The carburetor passage controlled by the solenoid may remain restricted even when the solenoid moves correctly. Deposits can block fuel flow and cause a no-start or stalling condition.
Backfiring After Shutdown
The fuel shutoff solenoid helps reduce fuel flow when the engine is switched off. If the plunger does not close, unburned fuel may enter the hot exhaust and create a backfire.
Backfiring may also result from high shutdown speed, ignition timing, exhaust temperature, or other fuel-system issues.

- Thread size
- Connector style
- Number of wires
- Plunger length
- Carburetor model
- Engine model and specification
