How to Prevent Small Engine Carburetor Problems During Storage

Many small engine carburetor problems begin while equipment is stored. Gasoline can deteriorate, absorb moisture, leave deposits, and damage fuel-system components during long periods of inactivity.

Proper preparation can reduce hard starting, surging, fuel leaks, stuck floats, and blocked carburetor passages when the equipment is returned to service.

Use Fresh Fuel

Do not begin a long storage period with fuel that is already old or contaminated. Fuel quality can deteriorate before the equipment is stored.

Follow the engine manufacturer’s recommendations for acceptable fuel and storage duration.

Use Fuel Stabilizer When Appropriate

Fuel stabilizer can slow oxidation when added to fresh gasoline in the correct amount. It does not restore fuel that has already deteriorated.

After adding stabilizer, run the engine long enough for treated fuel to reach the carburetor.

Drain the Fuel System When Recommended

Some manufacturers recommend draining the tank and carburetor for extended storage. Others recommend storing the equipment with stabilized fuel.

Use the procedure specified for the engine rather than assuming one method is correct for every application.

Inspect the Fuel Tank

Check for:

  • Water
  • Rust
  • Dirt
  • Damaged cap seal
  • Blocked tank vent
  • Deteriorated fuel lines

Correct contamination before storage so debris does not settle into the carburetor.

Replace a Restricted Fuel Filter

A partially restricted filter may allow the engine to run before storage but create a hard-start or lean condition later.

Install the correct filter and observe the required flow direction.

Inspect the Carburetor for Leaks

Check the bowl gasket, inlet fitting, primer bulb, fuel line, shutoff solenoid, and mounting surfaces. Do not store equipment with an active fuel leak.

Keep the Equipment Clean and Dry

Dirt and moisture around the carburetor and control linkages can contribute to corrosion and sticking. Clean the exterior without forcing water into electrical connectors, intake openings, or fuel-system vents.

Protect Against Rodent Damage

Rodents may damage fuel lines, wiring, air-filter housings, and insulation during storage. Inspect the equipment before the first start of the season.

Returning Equipment to Service

Before starting after storage:

  • Inspect for fuel leaks
  • Check engine oil level and condition
  • Confirm the throttle and choke move freely
  • Inspect the air filter
  • Use fresh fuel
  • Check battery condition when equipped
  • Inspect wiring and fuel lines

If the Engine Will Not Start After Storage

Check the fuel quality, carburetor bowl, jets, inlet needle, shutoff solenoid, spark plug, and intake gaskets.
