If a Polaris Sportsman cranks normally but will not start, the starter system is operating, but the engine may not be receiving the correct fuel, spark, airflow, compression, or sensor information.
Begin with the simplest checks before replacing parts.
Check Battery Voltage
A weak battery may still crank the engine but allow voltage to drop too low for the fuel-injection or ignition system to operate correctly.
Inspect the battery terminals, ground cable, main connections, and battery condition.
Listen for the Fuel Pump
When the ignition is turned on, many fuel-injected Polaris vehicles briefly activate the fuel pump. If no sound is heard, inspect:

A clogged, damaged, or electrically disconnected injector can prevent starting. Inspect the connector and wiring before replacing the injector.
Inspect Engine Sensors
Depending on the application, a no-start condition may involve:
- Crankshaft-position sensor
- Throttle-position sensor
- Coolant temperature sensor
- Intake-air temperature sensor
- Manifold-pressure sensor
A failed coolant temperature sensor may provide incorrect temperature information and affect the starting fuel mixture.

Water temperature sensor 4010644 is associated with selected Polaris Sportsman, Ranger, and RZR applications. It should only be replaced after checking the connector, harness, and fitment information.
Inspect Fuses and Relays
Check the main fuse, ignition fuse, fuel-pump fuse, and related relays. Inspect terminals for corrosion or heat damage.
Check Safety and Control Conditions
Some models may require the brake, gear selector, or other controls to be in the proper position. Inspect relevant switches and wiring when the system does not behave normally.
Consider Compression and Mechanical Timing
If fuel and spark are present, the engine may have a compression, valve, timing, or internal mechanical problem.
