Excavator bucket pins and bushings carry heavy loads while allowing the bucket and linkage to pivot. As these components wear, the joint develops additional clearance. Excessive clearance can reduce digging precision, increase shock loading, and damage nearby components.
Inspecting the joint early may allow worn pins and bushings to be replaced before the bucket ears, stick, linkage, or pin bores become severely damaged.
Common Signs of Worn Pins and Bushings
- Excessive side-to-side bucket movement
- Clunking when changing direction
- Delayed bucket or linkage response
- Visible gaps around the pin
- Grease leaking rapidly from the joint
- Uneven pin wear
- Oval or enlarged pin bores
- Difficulty keeping the joint lubricated
Bucket Movement and Joint Play
Some clearance is normal, but noticeable movement between the bucket, linkage, stick, or bushings can indicate wear. With the machine safely parked and the attachment supported, observe the joint while the bucket is moved slightly.
Movement between the pin and bushing indicates internal wear. Movement between the bushing and the surrounding bore may indicate a loose bushing or damaged housing.
Clunking During Operation
A worn joint often produces a clunk when the operator changes bucket direction or loads the attachment. The sound occurs when the pin shifts across excessive clearance inside the bushing.
Clunking can also come from loose retainers, worn linkage components, or damaged mounting hardware, so inspect the entire assembly.
Uneven Wear on the Pin
Remove the pin and inspect its surface. Normal wear should be relatively even. Problem signs include:
- Deep grooves
- Flat spots
- Blue or dark heat discoloration
- Pitting or corrosion
- Wear concentrated on one side
- Cracks near retaining holes or shoulders
Uneven wear can point to misalignment, failed lubrication, bent linkage, damaged bushings, or excessive side loading.
Oval Bushings or Pin Bores
A circular bore can become oval as repeated loads act in one direction. Once the bore is oval, installing a new pin alone may not restore a tight fit.
Measure the bore in several directions. A meaningful difference between vertical and horizontal measurements can indicate oval wear.
Grease Problems
If grease exits one side of the joint immediately or cannot be pushed through the fitting, the grease passages may be blocked, the seals may be damaged, or the clearance may be excessive.
Contaminated grease containing dirt, metal particles, or water is another warning sign.
Pin Wear Versus Bushing Wear
A worn pin may measure smaller than its original diameter. A worn bushing may have an enlarged inside diameter. Both components can wear at the same time.
For an accurate diagnosis, measure:
- The least-worn section of the pin
- The most-worn section of the pin
- The bushing inside diameter in multiple directions
- The surrounding bore if the bushing is loose

Continued operation with excessive play can cause:
- Faster wear of replacement parts
- Damaged bucket ears
- Damaged stick or linkage bores
- Broken retainers
- Reduced digging accuracy
- Increased shock loads on hydraulic components
