Excavator bucket pins are heavy, tightly fitted components that may be difficult to remove after years of load, dirt, corrosion, and limited lubrication. Proper support, alignment, and equipment are essential during removal and installation.

Safety Before Beginning
- Park the machine on stable, level ground
- Lower and securely support the attachment
- Relieve hydraulic pressure
- Turn off the engine and remove the key
- Prevent unexpected machine or attachment movement
- Use lifting equipment rated for the pin and attachment weight
- Wear eye, hand, and foot protection
Never work beneath an unsupported bucket, boom, stick, linkage, or attachment.
Clean the Joint
Remove dirt, grease, rust, and debris from the pin ends, retainers, grease fittings, and surrounding joint. Cleaning makes it easier to identify the retention method and reduces the chance of contamination entering the bushings.
Identify and Remove the Retainer
Bucket pins may be held in place by:
- Keeper plates
- Retaining bolts
- Cross pins
- Snap rings
- Threaded nuts
- Locking tabs
Inspect the retainer for deformation, damaged threads, cracks, or wear. Replace damaged retaining components rather than reusing them.
Support and Align the Attachment
The bucket, linkage, stick, or cylinder must be positioned so that there is minimal load on the pin. Even a small amount of misalignment can trap the pin.
Use suitable lifting, blocking, or hydraulic positioning methods to align the bores before attempting removal.
Remove the Existing Pin
Depending on the fit and condition, removal may require:
- A properly sized drift
- A hydraulic pin press
- A mechanical puller
- Controlled heating performed by qualified personnel
- Lifting equipment to support the pin
Do not stand directly in line with the pin while applying force. Large excavator pins are heavy and can move unexpectedly once released.
Inspect the Removed Pin
Check for:
- Grooves
- Flat spots
- Cracks
- Bending
- Corrosion
- Heat discoloration
- Blocked grease passages
- Damaged retaining holes
Uneven wear can provide clues about misalignment, bushing damage, or insufficient lubrication.
Inspect the Bushings and Bores
Measure and inspect the bushings before installing the replacement pin. A new pin should not be installed into badly worn, loose, or oval bushings.
Also inspect seals, grease passages, fittings, and surrounding structural bores.
Prepare the Replacement Pin
Confirm that the replacement matches the original:
- Diameter
- Overall length
- Usable length
- Shoulder dimensions
- Retaining-hole position
- Keeper arrangement
- Grease passages
- Material and surface treatment
Clean the replacement pin and apply the specified lubricant or assembly grease.
Install the New Pin
Align the bores carefully before inserting the pin. Do not use excessive force to drive a pin through misaligned components. Forcing installation can damage the pin, bushings, seals, and surrounding bores.
Support the pin’s weight during installation and use appropriate pressing or lifting equipment.
Reinstall Retainers and Lubricate
Install the keeper plate, bolt, ring, or other retention hardware according to the machine specifications. Confirm that the pin cannot move sideways or rotate in a way not intended by the design.
Lubricate the joint until clean grease reaches the proper exit points. Wipe away excess grease and inspect for blocked passages or leaks.
Test the Joint
Operate the attachment slowly and without load. Watch for:
- Binding
- Abnormal noise
- Excessive movement
- Retainer movement
- Grease leakage
- Misalignment
